Why does the battery heat up?

During operation, a lithium-ion battery generates heat due to energy flow between cells. The greater the load, the more intense the heating, which reduces efficiency. Enclosing the battery in a sealed casing can make the situation worse by trapping heat and accelerating performance loss.

Prolonged overheating speeds up cell degradation, weakening its ability to store energy. To prevent this, it is essential to ensure proper working conditions and avoid excessive heat buildup.

How does temperature affect range?

Higher temperatures result in greater energy loss. Lithium-ion batteries operate best between 15°C and 25°C. When temperatures rise above this range, internal resistance increases, leading to higher energy consumption and reducing the distance that can be covered on a single charge.

Excessive heat also accelerates the degradation of electrolytes—the substances inside the cells responsible for transporting electrical charges. When electrolytes weaken, the battery struggles to release stored energy, discharging faster and requiring more frequent recharging.

Additionally, overheating creates a vicious cycle—the hotter the battery, the faster it loses efficiency, which forces even greater power consumption. In extreme cases, battery management system (BMS) overheating can limit motor output and reduce e-bike performance. Keeping the battery at an optimal temperature is key to maximizing its potential and extending its lifespan.

How to maintain the right battery temperature?

To keep your battery working efficiently for as long as possible, it is important to maintain proper conditions:

Avoid long rides on maximum assist – high motor output generates more heat. Lower assist levels on flat terrain reduce energy use and limit heat buildup.

Charge in the right conditions – batteries naturally warm up while charging, and a hot environment makes it worse. To prevent efficiency loss, charge your e-bike in a cool, well-ventilated place.

Do not leave your e-bike in direct sunlight – a battery that starts out hot will already be less efficient before the ride begins. On warm days, park in the shade whenever possible.

How to take care of an e-bike battery?

Excess heat can shorten battery lifespan and reduce range. To prevent this, avoid sudden acceleration and prolonged riding on high assist levels—gradually adjusting power helps manage energy use and minimize overheating. After a long ride, let the battery cool down before charging.

Another important factor is storage. If the battery is exposed to high temperatures for extended periods, even when not in use, its overall capacity may degrade faster. Keeping the battery in a moderate, climate-controlled space ensures stable performance and longevity.
